Special Ops Review: Smart, Engaging, and Built for Spy Thriller Fans

Special Ops may look like a familiar espionage thriller on the surface, but what makes it stand out is how confidently it balances intelligence work, suspense, and long-form mission storytelling. In my view, this is worth watching, especially if you enjoy spy dramas that focus more on planning and strategy than nonstop action.

The story follows Himmat Singh, a RAW officer who believes a single mastermind is behind multiple terror attacks across India. As he and his team investigate across different countries, the series gradually pieces together a larger operation involving surveillance, covert movement, and long-term intelligence work.

What actually works

The strongest part of Special Ops is its structure and lead performance. Instead of rushing into explosions or chase scenes every few minutes, the show lets the investigation build layer by layer. Kay Kay Menon carries the series extremely well because he plays Himmat Singh with calm authority rather than exaggerated heroism, which makes the character feel more credible.

One thing that stands out even more: the series becomes more interesting whenever it leans into the idea that intelligence work is often about patience, reading patterns, and making quiet decisions under pressure rather than dramatic action.

What feels weak

It is not a flawless show. Some portions feel stretched, especially when the series spends too much time setting up side tracks that do not always pay off equally well. A few action beats also feel more functional than memorable.

Who should watch it

If you liked The Family Man, Jack Ryan, or spy thrillers with a grounded tone, this should work well for you. But if you are looking for a very fast, twist-heavy binge, this may feel a little more methodical than exciting.

Final verdict

My take: smart and steady. What keeps it engaging is that it treats intelligence work with enough seriousness to feel convincing while still remaining accessible and entertaining. It is a strong pick for fans of Indian spy thrillers.
