Wednesday Review: Stylish, Entertaining, and Carried by a Very Strong Lead

Wednesday may look like a teen mystery series with gothic styling, but what makes it stand out is how confidently it lets its lead character define the entire tone. In my view, this is worth watching, especially if you enjoy lighter supernatural stories with attitude and personality.

The story follows Wednesday Addams as she joins Nevermore Academy, a school for outcasts, while trying to solve a murder mystery connected to her family and a dangerous creature haunting the area. The setup is familiar enough, but the show keeps itself watchable by leaning heavily into her detached worldview and the strange environment around her.

What actually works

The strongest part of Wednesday is its tone and lead performance. The show understands that its biggest strength is not the mystery itself, but how fun it is to watch Wednesday move through a world she clearly finds ridiculous. Jenna Ortega carries the series with enough control and consistency that even weaker scenes stay entertaining.

One thing that stands out even more: the character works because the show does not try too hard to “soften” her — it trusts that her distance, bluntness, and odd emotional rhythm are exactly what make her compelling.

What feels weak

It is not a perfect series. The mystery itself is not always as strong as the atmosphere around it, and some side characters feel more functional than memorable. At times, it also leans a little too close to standard teen-drama structure.

Who should watch it

If you liked Lucifer, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, or supernatural shows with a playful dark tone, this should work for you. But if you are looking for a tightly written mystery or something emotionally deeper, this may feel a little surface-level.

Final verdict

My take: stylish and fun. What makes it work is that it understands its lead character is the real event, not the plot around her. It is not a flawless show, but it is a very watchable one.
