Another Review: Creepy, Suspenseful, and One of Anime’s Most Effective Horror Mysteries

Another may look like a typical haunted school anime at first, but what makes it stand out is how effectively it builds dread through silence, paranoia, and inevitability. In my view, this is absolutely worth watching, especially if you enjoy horror anime that focuses more on atmosphere and tension than constant jump scares.

The story follows Kouichi Sakakibara, a transfer student who joins a class surrounded by strange behavior, whispered rules, and an unsettling sense that something is deeply wrong. As he becomes drawn toward the mysterious Mei Misaki, he slowly uncovers a deadly curse tied to the class — one that turns ordinary school life into a countdown of fear and sudden death.

What actually works

The strongest part of Another is its atmosphere. The anime knows how to make classrooms, hallways, and everyday silence feel threatening. It also does a strong job of building uncertainty around what is real, what is superstition, and whether the characters are making the situation worse through fear itself. That kind of tension is what gives the series its staying power.

One thing that stands out even more: the anime becomes most effective when it makes the curse feel less like a monster story and more like a social breakdown — where fear, denial, and group behavior become just as dangerous as the supernatural threat itself.

What feels weak

It is not a flawless anime. Some deaths can feel a little too exaggerated, and certain twists may feel more dramatic than deeply layered. A few viewers may also find the later stretch more chaotic than psychologically sharp.

Who should watch it

If you liked Erased, The Promised Neverland, or dark mystery anime with horror elements, this should work very well for you. But if you want grounded realism or subtle horror only, parts of it may feel a bit theatrical.

Final verdict

My take: creepy and gripping. What makes it memorable is not just the body count, but the way it turns a normal school setting into something quietly cursed and emotionally unstable.
