Lucifer Review: Stylish, Funny, and Better When It Leans Into Emotion

Lucifer may look like a light supernatural crime procedural at first, but what makes it stand out is how much of its appeal comes from character charm and emotional growth rather than the cases themselves. In my view, this is worth watching, especially if you want something fun, bingeable, and easy to connect with.

The story follows Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil himself, who gets bored of Hell and starts living in Los Angeles, where he ends up helping the police solve crimes. What begins as a playful fantasy setup gradually turns into a story about identity, guilt, love, family dysfunction, and self-worth.

What actually works

The strongest part of Lucifer is its lead performance and tone. The show works because it understands how far charisma can carry a story, and Tom Ellis gives Lucifer enough humor, arrogance, and vulnerability to keep him consistently watchable. The emotional side of the series also lands better than expected once the characters are given room to evolve.

One thing that stands out even more: the show becomes much more engaging once Lucifer stops being entertaining only because he is “the Devil” and starts becoming interesting because of how emotionally immature and damaged he actually is.

What feels weak

It is not a perfect series. The case-of-the-week structure can become repetitive, and not every season has the same strength. Some emotional arcs are also stretched longer than necessary, which affects pacing.

Who should watch it

If you liked Wednesday, Supernatural, or character-driven fantasy with humor and romance, this should work well for you. But if you want a tightly written thriller or deep mythology-heavy storytelling, this may feel too light.

Final verdict

My take: fun but uneven. What keeps it alive is that the main character is entertaining enough to carry a lot of repetition, and when the emotional writing clicks, the show becomes more effective than it first appears.
