Gen V Review: Chaotic, Violent, and Better Than It Needed to Be

Gen V may look like a simple spin-off made to cash in on The Boys, but what makes it stand out is that it actually builds its own identity instead of just copying the original. In my view, this is worth watching, especially if you like dark superhero stories with energy and attitude.

The story follows a group of superpowered students at a university run by the same corrupt system seen in The Boys. What begins as a campus-style superhero drama quickly turns into something darker, involving experiments, hidden agendas, and violent power struggles. The setup is familiar, but the series moves fast enough to stay engaging.

What actually works

The strongest part of Gen V is its pace and character tension. The show knows it has to be entertaining, and it rarely feels flat. The younger cast brings enough unpredictability to keep the story active, and the writing is at its best when it leans into insecurity, ambition, and the pressure of being powerful inside a broken system. It also benefits from not taking itself too seriously all the time.

One thing that stands out even more: the show works better than expected when it treats power as something deeply tied to identity and self-image, which makes the college setting feel more than just a backdrop.

What feels weak

It is not a perfect series. Some emotional beats feel rushed, and a few characters clearly get more attention than others. If you are expecting the same level of sharp satire or impact as The Boys, this may feel a little lighter and less precise.

Who should watch it

If you liked The Boys, Invincible, or dark superhero content with violence and sarcasm, this should work for you. But if you are not already interested in this universe, the show may not hit quite as hard on its own.

Final verdict

My take: messy but fun. What makes it work is that it understands exactly what kind of show it wants to be and commits to that tone. It is not essential television, but it is a much stronger spin-off than expected.
