Better Call Saul Review: Slow, Precise, and One of the Best Character Dramas in Modern TV

Better Call Saul looks like a spin-off built to extend the Breaking Bad universe, but what makes it stand out is how confidently it becomes its own show. In my view, this is absolutely worth watching, especially if you appreciate writing that values character over constant chaos.

The story follows Jimmy McGill, a struggling lawyer trying to build a legitimate career while repeatedly drifting toward shortcuts, manipulation, and self-sabotage. What begins as a legal drama gradually opens into something much heavier, involving crime, identity, ambition, and the slow erosion of personal ethics.

What actually works

The strongest part of Better Call Saul is its character writing and control. The show does not rush to impress the viewer — it earns impact through detail, patience, and emotional precision. Bob Odenkirk gives Jimmy a strange mix of charm, sadness, and self-destruction that keeps him deeply watchable even when he is making terrible decisions. It also helps that the show understands silence, tension, and consequence better than most crime dramas.

One thing that stands out even more: Jimmy’s arc works so well because the show never treats his transformation as a sudden “fall” — it feels like a long chain of smaller compromises that become harder to ignore over time.

What feels weak

It is not a perfect show. The pacing is very deliberate, and that will not work for everyone. Some viewers may find the legal and procedural portions too slow, especially if they are expecting the same immediate intensity as Breaking Bad.

Who should watch it

If you liked Breaking Bad, Ozark, or morally complex crime dramas with strong performances, this should work extremely well for you. But if you prefer fast-moving plots and frequent payoff, this may feel too restrained at first.

Final verdict

My take: quietly brilliant. What makes it memorable is not just that it is well-written, but that it understands people deeply enough to make even small choices feel tragic. It is one of the rare spin-offs that fully justifies its own existence.
