Terror in Resonance Review: Atmospheric, Intelligent, and Quietly Devastating

Terror in Resonance may look like a stylish thriller about teenage terrorists, but what makes it stand out is how emotionally hollow and unsettling it intentionally feels. In my view, this is absolutely worth watching, especially if you enjoy anime that is more reflective and psychologically heavy than action-driven.

The story follows Nine and Twelve, two mysterious boys who carry out acts of terrorism in Tokyo while leaving behind cryptic clues for the authorities. As the investigation unfolds, the anime slowly reveals that the real story is not just about the attacks themselves, but about trauma, abandonment, and the human cost of being treated like an experiment instead of a person.

What actually works

The strongest part of Terror in Resonance is its atmosphere and emotional restraint. The anime never feels loud for the sake of it — instead, it uses silence, music, and distance to create a haunting emotional tone. The soundtrack especially plays a huge role in making the series feel melancholic and unforgettable.

One thing that stands out even more: the anime becomes most powerful when you realize the story is less about terrorism and more about what happens when broken systems create people who no longer believe they belong anywhere.

What feels weak

It is not a flawless anime. Some viewers may find parts of the plot a little too abstract or emotionally distant, and a few story choices in the middle stretch can feel slightly uneven compared to how strong the atmosphere is overall.

Who should watch it

If you liked Erased, Psycho-Pass, or darker psychological anime with a serious tone, this should work very well for you. But if you want a fast, action-heavy thriller, this may feel more quiet and emotionally heavy than expected.

Final verdict

My take: haunting and thoughtful. What makes it memorable is that it tells a deeply sad story with restraint instead of melodrama, and that gives it a different kind of emotional weight.
